Age Requirements

Normally, the minimum age for driving cars is 17, but if you're getting Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate (mobility component), you can drive at 16.

Eyesight Requirements

You must be able to read the old style car registration plate (eg Y123ABC) at a distance of 20.5 metres or the new style registration plate (eg AB55ABC) at a distance of 20 metres.  If you wear glasses or contact lenses to read the registration plate, you must wear these every time you drive.

Medical Requirements

It is the responsibility of the licence holder to inform the DVLA of any medical conditions that may affect their ability to drive.  The DVLA will then assess your application against the national medical guidelines and the legal requirements.  If successful, you will then be issued with a provisional driving licence.  This process usually takes around 15 working days.
